Updates from APHA

An entry from the August issue of the NHPHA e-Newsletter, submitted by Jeanie Holt, Co-Chair of the NHPHA Policy Committee

Every August, APHA organizes the Public Health Action campaign (PHACT).  The Government Affairs Department makes it really easy for you to act on behalf of public health.  Here is the info for this year.  Let us know what you do during this August Congressional recess!

From the desk of Don Hoppert, Director of Government Relations, APHA
Now is the time to reach out to your members of Congress.  During the August congressional recess many members of Congress return to their home districts which provides you with many chances to educate them on the importance of public health.

Start now:

Take action while they are in town:
  • Keep a lookout for town halls and public events
  • Request a meeting with your members of Congress or their staff
  • Invite them to visit our program
  • Submit an op-ed to your local newspaper to help shap the national debate.  Send an email to mediarelations@apha.org to get templates and tips to get published
  • Use social media to bring attention to your PHACT campaign activities and to help amplify your efforts
Need help getting started?  Email us at PHACT@apha.org or visit the PHACT campaign Web page for more helpful tips and resources including recorded webinars and fact sheets on each advocacy priority.
