Affiliate Day at APHA Annual Meeting

By Jeanie Holt, Affiliate Representative to the Governing Council of APHA

Are you going to the APHA Annual Meeting in Chicago this year? If so, you MUST come to Affiliate Day. Sponsored by the Council of Affiliates (COA) and held the Saturday before the Opening Session of the APHA Annual Meeting, this is a full day of learning, teaching, sharing, networking, as well as strengthening, and celebrating the work of affiliates.  All Affiliate Day events are all free –no registration fee, only THE HONOR OF YOUR RESERVATION, PLEASE—RSVP. Here’s what the Day offers:

·        Breakfast and networking: The day starts with food, beverages, and connecting with established and new colleagues from your region and the COA.

·        Updates from APHA on Affiliate-related matters: This always includes information about policy as well as other internal and external issues that impact affiliates and information on changes that are occurring within APHA and the public health community.

·        Affiliate Tag: One of our most popular activities is Affiliate Tag. Each affiliate has ONE minute to tell the rest of us about ONE activity (or two if you speak quickly) that has been particularly effective in the past year. We celebrate our successes while gaining ideas for our own planning.

·        Learning: Throughout Affiliate Day there are learning opportunities including best practices in Association management as described by your peers and a session for new affiliate leaders on the ways APHA and the affiliates serve and strengthen each other.

·        Reception:  Affiliate Day ends with the COA Awards and Networking Reception. Awards are given for Affiliate of the Year, Affiliate Member of the Year, Student of the Year, Advocacy Awards and the Council of Affiliates Chair Award. In giving these awards, werecognize the recipients and the work they do at anational eventin thepresenceoftheirfriends, colleagues, and APHAstaff.Thisreception providesan excellentplatformfor all of APHA to celebrate the importance of the Affiliates in the work of creating the healthiest nation by 2030. In addition, candidates for APHA elected offices meet and greet attendees.  There is lots of reconnecting with old friends and getting acquainted with new ones. This has become the "must attend" event at the Annual Meeting.
